I am currently a Year 13 international student. While I'm taking English as a language subject now, I do not plan on majoring in it in university (I don't think formal education on the subject should be the sole indicator of one's proficiency in the language). For my AS Level English results, I received a Grade A, and I recently took IELTS and received an 8.5. I have an excellent or even intuitive command of the language. I have experience in tutoring, and I am a native Cantonese speaker as well, so I should be able to connect with Cantonese-speaking students. Speaking from personal experience, regarding academic support for learners and specifically in the English subject, I believe that in order for progress to be made, one must abandon the traditional black-and-white approach of formal education in the subject. It would be a marginalization of what could be a potentially fun and colorful way of expression and culture; to reduce English as a whole to just bare grammatical regulation and such stiff structures of speech would be an evisceration of the language of which I have a vigorous passion for.

I believe that to excel in the English subject is simply a byproduct of immersion in the culture. Of course, this would require one to take an active interest in the culture itself, and that is why I said to abandon traditional formats of English education - it would seem like a tiresome chore for those on whom it is imposed upon! No, I would rather take on an alternative approach to encourage and foster interest for it, much like how I was encouraged and fostered to take an interest in and thus immerse in the culture, by promoting it in an enjoyable manner in the form of English books, captivating movies, and even in art: poetry, music, etc. Forget about worksheets and workbooks; they are simply a measure of proficiency in the subject and not at all an encouraging method to teach it and will only be issued at the end of each lesson only as that - a measure of proficiency. Improvement in a subject is a long-term process. You cannot expect to be enrolled in tuition just when the exam season is about to start and achieve stellar results. It requires long-term dedication to fostering interest and eventually advancing in the subject. That's why I prefer to have long-term students rather than teach only when it is seemingly needed to boost grades. There is no specific framework for how classes will be taught - every learner is an individual, and so will each class be. Read less
